One-day visit – TAMILNADU STATE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION  (13-09-2024)

With the immense support of our Founder, chancellor Dr A.C. Shanmugam, and our President, Mr A.C.S. Arunkumar, and under the guidance of the Director, Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr N. Murugavel, and Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof.Dr K. Murugadoss, the Faculty of Law at Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute, Maduravoyal, successfully organized a one-day visit to the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission on 13th September 2024 The visit was coordinated by faculty members Mr. Nizar Ahamed and Mrs. Archana.

In the Morning session, a dynamic lecture on Human Rights was delivered by Thiru Suntharesan sir Deputy Superintendent of Police, A member of the State Human Rights Commission. He explained the three wings of the Human Rights Commission and elaborated on the appointment and composition of both the State and National Human Rights Commissions. The lecture covered major human rights issues, various violations, and the connection between the Constitution and human rights. DSP Suntharesaen also addressed all the students’ questions at the end of the session, ensuring clarity on the discussed topics.

The afternoon session was led by the former Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and current Chairperson, Honorable Justice Manikumar sir, along with Honorable Member Justice Kannathasan sir. He spoke about the formation and history of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), and how both the State and National Human Rights Commissions operate. He provided a detailed explanation of the procedure for filing a human rights complaint and shared insights on recent human rights cases. Justice Kannathasan also highlighted the various investigations conducted by the commission and concluded his speech by motivating the students to actively contribute to human rights awareness.

He emphasized the importance of public awareness about the Human Rights Commission and encouraged students to write and present research papers on related topics, offering them a significant opportunity for intellectual engagement. The visit proved to be an enriching experience for the students, leaving them with valuable knowledge and insights about human rights issues and the workings of the commission.

In the evening session Mr. Sugumar, a Chief Section Officer, provided a detailed explanation of the practical aspects of the State Human Rights Commission’s operations. He gave a concise overview of how the commission functions on a day-to-day basis, shedding light on its various responsibilities and processes. His insights helped the participants gain a better understanding of the practical workings of the commission, complementing the theoretical knowledge shared during the earlier sessions.

The session was further concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by one of our students, expressing gratitude to the esteemed speakers and organizers for their valuable insights and the opportunity to visit the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission.
